Walter Owens Day, 81, died unexpectedly Sept. 30 at his residence in Flint Hill
Mr. Day was bom Nov. 3, 1922 in Yakima, Washington and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was the second of nine children bom to Walter Van and Margaret Owens Day.
Graduating from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1946, (he actually was Class of‘47 but graduation was accelerated because of the war), he served 11 years with the U. S. Marine Corp.
After the Marines, Mr. Day had a varied career: mechanical engineer, farmer, addiction counselor, director with the SBA, contributing writer for the Rappahannock News, artist, inventor, poker player, lover of poetry, member of the “Lunch Bunch” for 20 years and resident of Rappahannock County for 21.
He is survived by a brother, Ibm Day of Hood River, Oregon; two sisters, Dorothy Showers of Missoula, Montana and Mary Stamper of Seattle, Washington and many nieces and nephews.
Although his marriage to Eileen M. Day ended in divorce in 1971, they had nine children and 16 grandchildren.
He is survived by those nine children— Stephen, Margaret, Robin, Donal, Vincent, Kevin, Lisa, Maureen and Johanna—and 16 grandchildren Dugald, Lily, Phillip, Kate, Justin, Marisa, Joseph, Ted, Ben, Devin, Carly, Logan, Jack, Grace, Gaelan and Miquel.
Mr. Day also is survived by his ex-wife, Rosie Mullany, and stepchildren Steve, Maureen, Jim, Joan and Tam.

Interment will be private at the U. S. Naval Academy. A memorial service is being planned for sometime later this month.
