The Museum for Sepulchral Culture opened in Kessel, Germany in 1951 with the purpose of raising public awareness of grieving rituals and encouraging people to talk about death-related issues. Its exhibits range from the traditional, such as coffins that date back four centuries, to the more controversial. Among the latter is an exhibition of coffins shaped like fish and a luxury automobile. As eccentric as these coffins appear to be, they actually draw their inspiration from the burial people of the Ga people, a major ethnic group in Ghana. According to Ga tradition, caskets should be made to reflect objects that played a particular role in the deceased’s life. As such, objects may range from churches to golf bags.
