Waymon James Edwards, who has been coach of a number of girls basketball teams in the area, has been charged with the sexual abuse of a 16year-old girl in Fauquier County.
Edwards, 29, of Warrenton, was arrested April 13 on a charge of “animate object sexual penetration” by Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office Det. Fulton Lucas. Edwards was held in the Fauquier County Detention Center until Monday, when bond was posted.
On Monday, April 18, the defendant appeared before Judge H. Dudley Payne, Jr. in Fauquier County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Edwards’ attorney, T. Huntley Thorpe, III pleaded for Edwards’ release on bond.
Thorpe said, “This man has a clean past, Your Honor, it is interesting to look at this charge in light of his past,” Thorpe said, following his opening statement which spoke of Edwards’ honorable discharge from the United States Army, the fact that he lives with his parents and is currently a college student, pursuing his degree at Old Dominion University, through Lord Fairfax Community College.
In rebuttal, Fauquier County’s Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Costanza reminded the Court that the defendant is a “coach and mentor with a relationship — an inappropriate relationship,” who “molested, for lack of a better word, this 16-year-old girl.”
Costanza requested that, if Edwards were to be released on bond, the court monitor him through Adult Court Services.
Payne ordered a $10,000 bond for Edwards and added further conditions.
The accused:
• May have no contact with the victim in the case.
• May have no contact with any females under the age of 18 years.
• Is not allowed on the grounds of any school except Lord Fairfax
