the University of Virginia’s Echols Scholar Program for the coming year. The Echols Scholar Program offers a great deal of academic freedom to 150 selected members of each freshman class. Echols scholars have no required courses and are not required to select a major area of study. Echols scholars generally come from the top 5 percent of the entering class. According to the UVA admissions office, “They are persons with demonstrated intellectual and personal liveliness as well as strong academic performance.” Shannon is planning to enter medical school following her undergraduate studies.
A mail scam was exposed in Rappahannock County. Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke said that he received a phone call earlier this month from a county resident who had received an unsolicited product in the mail, and then had received badgering phone calls about paying for the product. “If you receive something unsolicited in the mail, under Virginia Law that is considered a gift, you are under no obligation to pay for it,” said Luke.
