While attending the University of Virginia, where he majored in government, Gilbert interned for George Allen on Capitol Hill and then worked on Allen’s campaign for the governorship.
Gilbert then studied law at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, graduating with his law degree in 1996. He was also the president of his student body there as well as the president of the bar association in law school and a member of the mock trial team.
He returned to Shenandoah County as a prosecutor for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office and is now Assistant Commonwealth Attorney.
Gilbert’s platform
In pursuit of the House seat, Gilbert is very concerned about taxes in the Commonwealth.
“I feel strongly that Representatives in Richmond have to get the whole picture of taxes in perspective,” Gilbert said, “Virginia raised taxes at a record rate last year. We have to take a look at the tax structure and see how money is being spent by the legislature.”
