As we make our way through Rappahannock County on our day-to-day travels, we never stop tc> think that almost 150 years ago, this area was a war zone.
In July 24, 1863, General George Custer and his Confederate troops were returning home from a recent campaign in Gettysburg. At the same time A. P. Hill’s corps and Longstreet’s corps were marching down Richmond Road (the road now known as 729).
As Custer headed out of Amissville with his brigade of Michigan Cavalry the two parties accidentally met in what ended up being a full out engagement with losses on both sides totaling approximately 30. It was after this engagement
