Last week was filled with excitement for Jaimes D. Russell, 84, of Sperryville when a film crew and interviewers from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. pulled into his driveway.
In fact, this excitement began for Russell in September, 2003 when his book, “Beyond The Rim: From Slavery to Redemption in Rappahannock County, Virginia” was first published.
“It’s overwhelming,” Russell said, “I will never forget that first book signing on August 19, 2004 at the Barnes & Noble in Charlottesville. We sold 194 books that evening and I thought ‘what will they remember Russell for, something that they will remember what he looks like and what he sounds like.’”
