half an hour away. The coalition is investigating ways in which to deal with this situation.
Another issue is housing. While the hollows of Rappahannock County are beautiful and offer a great deal of seclusion, they are not easy to access. Driving down long winding roads can be a task when a person’s health is at stake. In addition there is currently no facility which houses elderly in the county.
A third issue is work force. Currently, finding people in Rappahannock County who are willing to work for the wages of a long-term care taker is a difficulty explained Morgan.
The coalition is looking into working with those who are seeking a career in health care and would be willing to care for the elderly in exchange for college credit or work experience.
The Rappahannock forum will be a setting in which citizens can come together to generate ideas on how to address some of these issues. The meeting will begin with several presentations by guest speakers and afterwards attendees will be broken into groups and asked specific questions. Following a short report of their conclusions, attendants will also be served a complimentary lunch.
Wanting to integrate community input with programs, the coalition is working hard to see that even those who cannot attend the meeting have a say. “It is important to have a collaborative approach and to try to involve lots of people in talking about what older people want in the community in terms of support,” said Morgan.
