of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; David of Warrenton, Virginia; and one daughter Susan Wise of Durango, Colorado, a son-in-law Jeff Wise and a daughter-in-law Laura Batchelder; as well as seven grandchildren: Lisa, Sarah, Patrick, Samuel, Martha, Jackson, and David. He is also survived by his sister Grace Batstone, his nephews David and Neil of Wolfboro, New Hampshire, and his nieces Barbara and Adell. He was predeceased by his brother Howard.
Mr. Batchelder joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school. He saw action in the Pacific Theater in World War H on the USS Riddle. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Clarkson in Potsdam, New York, where he met his wife Jane. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He also spent a year at Harvard where he participated in a Russian Studies program.
After 25 years of government service, he retired in 1973 and began his real estate business in Rappahannock County. Many people will remember his humorous real estate ads from “behind the rock wall.”
Recently, he and his wife moved into their new home which was designed and built by their son, David.
Roger Batchelder was known throughout the community as a consummate volunteer in a number of organizations.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 3 p.m. on the top of Massie Mountain in Washington. A shuttle service will be available at the bottom of Massie Mountain.
