The love triangle may remind you of high school crushes or even the love connection between Jack and Rose in “Titanic,” but director Zhang Yimou plays it superbly. What is so beautiful about “House of Flying Daggers” is that this film offers fights set against the backdrop of fall transforming into winter mid-scene; dodging arrows and stopping swords with one’s fingertip. There are many moments of awe, a grand adventure told with beauty, charm and cinematic grace. As The Washington Post’s Stephen Hunter said, “the story isn’t the story here, nor are the flying daggers. The sheer joy of letting go as a tale overwhelms your senses and drives the known world away, that’s the story.”
The film is rated PG-13 and contains chaste sexual scenes and martial arts violence; in Mandarin Chinese with subtitles. Run time is 119 minutes.
