This past Monday our little community lost a beloved and familiar gentleman, Bradley Williams, and I, for one, just don’t want to admit that it’s true. I sit and wonder how so much time could’ve passed and brought me to a time when I wouldn’t be able to walk into the store up here and be able to pass the time with that smiling old gentleman who was such a fixture of my childhood.
I mean it was just yesterday that I was 7-years-old and sliding Popsicles across the counter one by one for Bradley to ring up. If you paid for them one by one you didn’t have to worry with the sales tax. Bradley of course thought that it was hilarious and would talk about it to anyone who happened to be in the store.
Back when Bradley ran the store exclusively, I loved to just sit on the porch and listen to him and the other ‘elders’ talk about the ‘old days’ and the time when such-and-such did this or that. Come to think of it a lot of the ‘elders’ have passed on too, and it saddens me think that my sons will not be able to experience the same ‘Mayberry’ type of childhood I did as
