offering eclectic cuisine to Rappahannock County.
“Most of the locals know the story and are probably tired of hearing it,” laughed Deluise.
However, newcomers to the area have not heard about the owners meeting in the parking lot of The Inn at Little Washington — Morf was a chef there while Deluise was a waiter. The pair went on to begin their own endeavor, a Bed & Breakfast in Amissville.
The county was not blessed with the number of dining establishments currently available, so the B & B began offering dinner to overnight guests. Soon locals began asking if they could dine as well. ■
Thus, a small dining area, allowing only 12 diners at a time with a fixed-price meal was the start of this successful restaurant. • Move to Flint Hill
In 1920 the building that now houses Four & Twenty Blackbirds was originally built to house a carpentry shop.
While the exterior has not changed drastically over the years, the building’s uses have.
It has been a general store, a doctor’s office, a real estate office and even the Rappahannock Democratic headquarters office.
However, the conversion to a restaurant was made first by Peggy Clarke who owned the ‘Comer Post.’ “It was a great local restaurant,” Deluise said.
Deluise and Morf bought the building in the spring of 1990, offering a short, but everchanging menu of delights.
