Katie Doss of Front Royal was accepted to the. Virginia Governor’s School for the Humanities, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and participating schools. This summer two hundred gifted high school students in the humanities will join two hundred gifted high school students in the arts for a four-week, theme based residential enrichment program at the University of Richmond. Allison Russo of Flint Hill recently was notified that she qualified for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Ms. Russo is one of 50,000 students out of approximately 1.3 million throughout the United States who, based on junior PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) Selection Index scores (critical reading + math + writing skills scores) qualifies for recognition in the National Merit J>7 Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers will be notified that they have qualified as either a National Merit Commended Student or Semifinalist.

The RCES second graders entertained fellow students April 28, with a puppet show. The program was Storytelling with Puppets adapted from the book Frog Legs by George Shannon. The students wrote the songs, created the sound effects, made the puppets, and directed on stage themselves.
