school principals David Covington and Roger Mello both made presentations to the Board.
Elementary school principal David Covington explained that kindergarten through third grade teachers had the opportunity to purchase new books, but concluded it was not necessary at this time to spend the money because students have had a 90-percent pass rate on their SOLS.
Covington went on to explain that teachers have developed a very strong math program using manipulatives. The fourth and fifth grade teachers have chosen a new series of math texts with more problem solving while sixth and seventh grade teachers are also going for new books to prepare the eighth graders they will be sending to the high school. The elementary school will also be adopting new English texts in grades six and seven after they have previewed the format for the Cambridge Program the school is implementing.
High school principal Roger Mello reported teachers have met to discuss adoptions of English, foreign language, and math textbooks. Math books that correlate with the Virginia SOLS were chosen while foreign language text books that offer a variety of additional materials such as tapes and CDs also appealed to teachers. While some of the English textbooks have been selected the high school too is waiting to review the Cambridge Program.
School Board members voted to adopt the textbooks currently chosen by teachers and hold the adoption of the English books until the next meeting, after the teachers have reviewed the Cambridge Program. Winners announced
