In other budget matters, Chappell reminded the board that Rappahannock County remains ranked at the bottom of counties in the region when it comes: to starting salaries for new teachers. The figure now is just over $33,000 and would move up by just under $1,500 if proposed increases win approval of the Board of Supervisors.
Both Chappell and School Board Chairman Wes Mills noted that there is to be a public hearing on the school budget recommendations next Tuesday, March 21, at 7:30 pm in the High School Band Room.
Making Tracks
Superintendent Chappell also brought news about the much-discussed track and field plans for the high school. On Monday, March 20, he reported to the Board, he will meet on the field with a contractor, an engineer, and County Administrator John McCarthy to, as Chappell put it, “finalize the plans” for the upgrading of the field, to decide which dirt gets moved where. After approval of the plans, he said, “"work would start quickly” on the grading, and would include installation of sod.
