By A. J. Collins Special to the Rappahannock News

Track and Field is a team sport.

But what happens when you don’t have a full team?

What happens when you have runners and field event participants do well in an event? What does that mean?

“We may not win as a team,” Rappahannock County head track and field coach Scott Stephens said, “but as individuals we can play a role. We’ll get some firsts, seconds and thirds in the (Bull Run) district meet.”

That spoiler role could be just what the Panthers need this spring. While such district rivals as Clarke County boast huge track and field teams, Rappahannock has a combined 29 athletes on the boys and girls teams. That will limit the points that can be scored. For example, the Panthers will not field relay teams in many meets.
