Rappahannock Electric Cooperative
Each year since 1996, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) has helped high school seniors pursue their career goals through its I EARN (Literacy, Education, and Rural Networking) Program. The LEARN Program is designed to provide financial assistance to those students who are seeking to advance their education beyond the high school level. * “REC is committed to helping local students achieve their educational goals,” says Brian Wolfe, public relations liaison for REC. “Whether they plan on attending an academic institution or trade school, the LEARN Program will assist students in reducing education expenses such as tuition, books, or room and board.”
In 2006, REC will acknowledge distinguished scholastic achievement by awarding three $1000 scholarships and six $500 scholarships to nine deserving students, lb be eligible, a student must be a high school senior, have a parent or guardian who is a member of REC (meaning they receive electric service from the Cooperative), and be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited educational or training institution. Interested students must complete an application form and write a 500-word essay.
Applications are available to eligible students through their guidance department, at any REC office or online at www. myrec.coop. Winners will be selected based upon their scholastic achievement, community involvement, recommendations, extracurricular activities and interest in rural affairs.
