Everyone likes to party on St. Patrick’s Day. For some it’s an excuse to wear green. For some it’s an excuse to pinch people who don’t. The Griffin Tavern, which styles itself as an English pub, has decided to emphasize its Englishness by celebrating Edward the Prince of Wales, sometimes called the Black Prince, instead of St. Patrick. This Friday, Griffin patrons are encouraged to wear black instead of green. Some people have chosen to view this as an insult to Ireland, the Irish, and everything green. But that’s silly. Edward wasn’t known for hurting Irish people, and neither is the Griffin Tavern. On Friday you won’t be able to throw a rock in this country without hitting a bar full of green people drinking'green beer and demanding green kisses because their Grandma married an O’Doyle. That’s nice, and I’ll be there with them. But it’s nice to know that if my eyes start to hurt from tliat sea of green, I’ll have an alternative.
