' Asked about how long the work would take, Chappell offered that spring sports would have to move to other fields, but that fall sports should be accommodated on the new grounds.
“I am cautiously optimistic,” the superintendent told the board, “that this will happen, that we will have the field and the track built. I don’t have any proof”, he said, but is clearly more optimistic than he used to be.
• Most of the monies for the track and field project are to copie from the Board of Supervisors, but Chappell told the Board.he has identifier! some $80,000 in interest income that the board could put toward the long-planned and controversial project. Asked after the meeting if the Board would have the opportunity to vote that funding, Chappell said he did not ..think such a vote necessary.
More SOLs
The board also heard the principal of the elementary school, Dave Covington, announce that students in the 4th, 6th and 7th grades will now be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. Because 3rd, 5th and 8th graders are already subjected to the SOL tests, that means, said Covington, “we will now be able to track individual growth in reading and math. This will help teachers,” he added, “to do a better job of teaching.”
