Lindsay himself is a testament to the possibilities for a high quality of life after retirement. Since retiring as a full time professor of Internal Medicine and Family Practice at the University of Virginia, he continues to teach medical students, serves on the Medical School Admissions Committee, and continues to conduct post graduate educational programs. He is Chair of the Commonwealth Council on Aging (appointed by the Gqvemor), and serves on the Board of Directors at the Virginia Center on Aging at Virginia Commonwealth University and also at the Virginia Gerontology Center at Virginia Tech. He is a champion skier, plays the trumpet, loves to fly-fish, and plays a wicked game of tennis.
The 2005 Conversation on Aging focused on the needs and concerns of older adults and solicited ideas from local citizens on ways Rappahannock could become more elder-friendly. Since last May, the partnership, which includes more than a hundred organizations and individuals from Rappahannock and the surrounding counties, has incorporated the visions and priorities that came out of those Conversations into a regional strategic plan, which will be presented and discussed at the 2006 Conversation on March 24.
Funding for this five-county partnership, “Aging Together: Five Communities Creating Choices”, is provided by Community Partnerships for Older Adults, a program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The goal of the partnership is to foster communication, coordinate and generate awareness, and enhance resources for elders and their families in the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Madison and Rappahannock.
All interested residents of Rappahannock County are invited to attend the March 24 Community Conversation, including citizens of all ages, members of the healthcare community, policy-makers, employers, and caregivers. Anyone who would like to attend or would like additional information should contact the Eldercare Coalition at (540) 829-6405 or email: information@elderpartnership.org. Pre-registration is requested. Complimentary lunch provided.
