Students from Mexico City visit Wakefield
Fourteen students from Westhill Institute, a private American International School in Mexico City, recently visited WCDS. The group of sixth graders, who stayed with a number of WCDS families, attended classes and participated in many special activities and field trips during their stay.
The visit began with an informal lunch at the school on Sunday, followed by games and a scavenger hunt to break the ice and help the students become better acquainted. It soon became evident that all the children shared a love of soccer, which they enthusiastically demonstrated later that afternoon.
On Tuesday, the students traveled to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport to tour the Air and Space Museum and view an Imax movie. Wednesday, the group traveled to the National Geographic building in Washington, D.C. for a private tour led by Chris Johns, a WCDS parent and editor of National Geographic. The students rounded out their week with a drive through the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and a visit to Jefferson’s Monticello.
During their stay, the Westhill group had the opportunity to share with Wakefield students their impressions about similarities between their cultures and schools, as well as differences. In the Wednesday Assembly, the Westhill contingent reenacted the format of their own assemblies, which included a demonstration of a synchronized march, the presentation of the flag of Mexico, and the singing of their national anthem.
The exchange between the two countries began last year, in an effort not only to enrich student experiences among other cultures but also to enhance the Spanish and English language programs of both schools. Wakefield middle school students are looking forward to reciprocating the visit by traveling to Mexico City for a week in April.
This is the first year that Spanish has been taught in preschool through seventh grade at WCDS. The school’s language program continues to include two years of an ancient language (Latin or Greek) and two years of upper school French or Spanish. Upper school students have the option to do a semesterlong exchange with a high school in Mexico City.
Leaving the nest
WCDS seniors continue to receive good news regarding college acceptances and scholarship offers: Song Yi Chang has been accepted at Hollins University and Averett University; Mary Davis has been accepted at Catholic University and was offered a $40,000 scholarship; Katie Doss, Kelly O’Connor, and Marissa Sullivan have been accepted at George Mason University; Dorian Matthews
