The enemies George Bush seeks to defend us from are the September 11 hijackers and the power bases that enabled them. These people want the world to be united under Sharia law in an 8th Century theocracy. For reference, that is where women’s fingernails are ripped out if they are found painted, elementary school children are locked into their burning school because the girls did not have proper head scarves to be on the street (two dozen burned to death), or where A1 Zarquawi can behead foreign journalists for the entertainment of A1 Jazeera’s TV audience without condemnation. The President is trying to defend us in spite of unremitting partisan attacks by the Democratic Party and the media, who offer no better solutions except that they should be in charge instead.
It would take a book to counter all of the misinformation in Ms. Theodore’s letter; I can only anecdotally address a few examples. George Bush may not be doing a perfect job; but he seems to be a human, so I think I need to recognize, tolerate, and work with a good-faith effort. Marxist daydreams of “how our economy might be altered so that it does not have to expand in order to succeed”, detached from the reality of human motivation, are not helpful. Neither is uncritical parroting of whiny partisan slogans without knowing or understanding the issues one is emoting on. Discussion of factual issues in the context of the real world might be.
