The top three perceived threats to the watershed chosen by recipients were “subdivision of land parcels”, “population growth” and “public sewage treatment plant discharge to stream.”
The last choice was selected by 45 survey respondents, and may reflect the recent county concern over Washington’s proposed wastewater plant.
Ninety-two percent of respondents said that they supported expenditures of public funds on watershed protection and restoration, a number Hunter admitted she found “surprising.”
However, Hunter herself remains unsure how valid a sample of Rappahannock is reflected in the RappFLOW survey.
“We wanted to get responses from all types of people, not just the ones who come to RappFLOW meetings. We’re not sure how accurate a sample this is.”
According to Hunter, further and more detailed analysis of the survey is planned, and more interpretive reports will be published.
