Humans have inhabited the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont areas of Virginia for at least 11,000 and perhaps 20,000 years. For all but the last 400 of those years, those inhabitants were Indians however neither this name nor the term Native American is quite accurate as a description of these early residents. Europeans explorers, mistaking America for the Far East, erroneously dubbed this continent’s denizens Indians (as opposed to the true Indians who charm snakes, dig for rubies with pay in rupees, and ride elephants for a living half a world away).
