Focusing on Richmond’s historic riverfront
By Tucker Hill
Special to the Rappahannock New*.
For its May show, The Packing Shed Gallery in Washington is featuring the classic photography of Richmonder George Collier.
Through Collier’s lens, Richmond’s riverside bridge piers and spans and historic 19 century canal walls and factory buildings become monumental architecture forms and spaces enhanced by the water’s reflections. These large format black and white images, several presented as paired panoramas or “diptych,” reveal Collier’s meticulous and patient process from selection of the perfect “photo moment” to the elegant finish of his prints.
