When one lives in a small community within small county, it could be tempting and maybe even reasonable, to think there may not *j*e enough” computers, faxes, or copiers to be able to earn much money recycling.
Cherl Crews, PTO mom and recycling leader for Rappahannock Elementary, explores every possible avenue to dispel that notion. This woman seemingly has the characteristics of being a “possibility thinker”, which has resulted in the PTO “for once having money in the bank”!
What are Cherl’s methods? She has come up with a couple of original ideas that have produced this exciting change in circumstances. She has obtained in-depth support from the County. She has created a web link with the County that is also a chat line. So in addition to county services being listed, she has been able to include the recycling information for the school. She can write personal notes or advertisements about her school’s recycling efforts, and others can respond.
There are two County Refuse Centers and she has placed a collection box and a CFK poster at each site. One of the sites is where the public drops off old printers, faxes, etc. and county employees open up the printers or other equipment, and retrieve the inkjets and larger cartridges for the school. They also collect used cell phones at both sites.
Cherl approached the local newspaper to run a Press Release (see CFK home page to download) and that has produced fantastic business response. The bank, the library and other businesses, along with various county departments, are donating cartridges regularly now. She provides businesses with collection boxes if they want to be a drop-off location (there are several around town). She makes the lx>xes out of wooden crates that vegetables come in, that she gathered from a local restaurant. She decorates them with CFK stickers and has actually plastered the community with CFK stickers. Cherl likes stickers!
