Indian sites?
Information on specific ‘Indian’ sites within Rappahannock County is very limited and mostly anecdotal. Several different sources report that there may have been an Indian Village at or near present-day Little Washington. It is also said that the first real business in the county was an Indian trading post housed in what is now the Middle Street Gallery; trade with which Indians is anybody’s guess. That building was located at the time on the lot now occupied by the Inn at Little Washington. There are also reports of Native American artifacts being found in Harris and Jenkins Hollows and at Huntly. Given the importance of the combination of water and high ground in selecting camp locations, it would also seem possible that Rock Mills and Slate Mills could have been important Indian sites, though to our knowledge no one has reported finding artifacts at these spots.
These first come-heres are a huge portion of our collective heritage and it is sad indeed that more is not known about them. The Rappahannock Historical Society is greatly interested in collecting additional knowledge about these early people.
