Back in December 2005, Peter Hitchen’s favorite horse, Hasty Hobo, was mysteriously shot and killed in his pasture at Hitchen’s Fullclip Farm in Sperryville.
Now, the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office may be close to charging a suspect in the case.
The shot that killed Hasty Hobo came from the woods across the Thornton River from the pasture, and at the time, Hitchen feared that it might be just the first of many.
“I was scared that it might be some kind of a sicko,” said Hitchen. Hoping to catch “Bo’s” killer and prevent any further incidents, Hitchen had the horse’s body autopsied by the Virginia State Veterinary Laboratory in Warrenton. A gunshot entry wound was found behind Hobo’s lung, in the girth area, and a rifle bullet was extracted. The Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crime, and sent the recovered bullet out for ballistic testing. Hitchen took a full page ad out in the Rappahannock News offering a reward for information that eventually climbed to $4,000.
“This was a great loss to me,” said Hitchen at the time.
Despite the large reward, no one came forward, and time went by.
