road that ran from New York City down through the southern part of the United States to San Diego and then up to San Francisco. They made sure it ran through Luray. And when a new bridge replaced an old iron bridge on Lee Highway across the Hawksbill Creek on Main Street in downtown Luray, the town became delirious with joy.
Between 1,500 and 2,000 showed up on the evening of June 12, 1934, for the dedication.
A newspaper account tells of a crowd that “surged, swayed, ebbed and flowed through almost every street, avenue, and alley of Luray.” The Luray Drum Corps marched through the main streets of the town, rounding people up.
People from every part of Page County showed up, as well as people from surrounding counties.
