Recognizing a growing presence of motorcycles on county roads and an increase in the number of motorcycle accidents, the Flint Hill students sought to reduce the rate at which these accidents are occurring. They called their eCybermission team the “Star Scout Troopers,” presumably since all four young men are also Boy Scouts.
They hypothesized that the mountainous terrain of Rappahannock makes it particularly challenging for unsuspecting motorcyclists to maneuver the curvy, hilly roads.
Thus, the team worked to provide motorcyclists with information to better prepare them for their rural county’s specific road conditions, anticipate problematic areas and maintain control of their motorcycles. They presented the results of their study to the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors, and were featured in The Rappahannock News.
Through eCybermission, the U.S. Army has awarded more than $2.5 million in prize money in support of the science, math and technology leaders of tomorrow.
