In 2004 the Border Patrol captured 1.2 million illegal immigrants. The federal government estimates that there are a total of 12 million illegal immigrants in America today. In the current debate over how to reform our nation’s immigration laws, one point is clear: We must regain control over who comes into this country.
Most of those who come here illegally do so in pursuit of a better life, but some instead come here to do us harm. Drugdealers, criminal gangs, and potential terrorists have all figured out that our borders are wide open. Not only does illegal immigration threaten our security, it costs our state, local, and federal governments billions of dollars by burdening social services.
In a post-9/11 world, America cannot afford to have vulnerable borders. The federal government’s primary function and constitutional responsibility is to protect the safety of, and to ensure the security of, its citizens. It is time for the federal government to take this task seriously and regain control of our borders. Decades-Old Failure
