RER is in the process of contracting with the University of Minnesota at Morris to power the campus, replacing the present source, natural gas. Engineer Schneider calculates that the University will save at least 40 percent of its’power bill by switchihg ft gasift* cation. In the Minnesota case, the gasifier will be run on what is called “stover”, the leavings of a com crop after the kernels have been removed: stalk, leaves, cob, “whatever,” says Schneider, “is left in the field”.

Count the benefits: municipalities save on ridding themselves of rubbish. Power users pay less, often far less, for power. The environment feels a lot better about not choking on fossil fuel toxins. And the sole by-product, dry ash, is sold as fertilizer.

Solar superstar

Also part of the show-and-tell at the Expo will be Charlie Bigelow of Round Hill, Virginia. Bigelow has named his company Light Speed Power, Inc. When he talks about it, Bigelow fairly bursts with intensity. The enthusiasm for what the sun’s energy can do fairly jumps out of this engineer with a degree in nuclear physics.

Bigelow sets up a backyard shed, one that drapes a tarp over a simple frame; the tarp is composed largely of photovoltaic cells that turn sun energy into direct current electricity. The shed
