from his grandfather, another James B., who in turn had learned “the business” from Gov. Alexander Spots wood, the granddaddy of the first Virginia westward expansion. Barbour and the Marshalls came out fine, acquiring large chunks of the remnants of Fairfax’s once mighty dominion. “Lighthorse” Harry was less successful; overextension eventually led to debtor’s prison and a disgraced exile to the Caribbean. Future owners of the Barbour and Marshall lands had to deal with by now, centuries old confusion of titles and lease arrangements. This confusion continued up to the formation of Shenandoah National Park in the early 1900s. No doubt, some residual problems lurk in the shadows even now.
One thing is certain, whatever your real estate venture in our fair County of today. Pay your next quitrent when due on December 5 or you will find that your land lease’ will expire in somewhat less than three lifetimes.
