When Johnny Jenkins passed away this past November, Larry Sherertz was affected by the outpouring of community support for John, Michelle and Hunter - a family that has given much to Spenyville was simply in emotional crisis.
Sherertz approached John and Michelle for their thoughts on a memorial tree planted in honor of their son to be planted at the elementary school. They liked the idea. After consulting with local tree expert, Lyt wood, they decided that a flowering cherry would be a good choice. Principal Dave Covington supported the plan and the tree was planted on April 28. The fourth grade and preschool class attended the ceremony with Rev. Jon Heddleston from Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in Sperryville who gave the blessing.
