May 20: Fun and education

at “Historical Sampler”

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 20, for an historic house tour in beautiful Rappahannock County that illuminates history through living demonstrations of life on an 1830s era plantation. The annual fundraiser sponsored by the Rappahannock Historical Society will focus on the activities one would have seen at a plantation of this era in the Piedmont of Virginia, including blacksmithing, weaving, butter churning, woodworking, and live 19th century dancing and Appalachian music and gospel singing. The interactive learning experience will fascinate adults as well as children. The event will be at Meadow Green Farm, a working farm on the Hughes River with an historic house in the shadow of Old Rag near Sperryville. Tickets are $10 in advance ($15 at the door) and only $5 for children from six to 12 years old. Walk-a-Thon

Last year $60,000 was raised in the fight against cancer. Sponsors are hoping that this amount will be exceeded this year. Ceremonies begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Rappahannock County Elementary School and continue until the following morning where participants will receive a continental breakfast. Teams will be accepted right up to the start.

Wine and Craft Festival

The 20th Annual Virginia Wine and Craft Festival will be held Saturday, May 20, in historic downtown Front Royal, Virginia. The festival hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. This festival has evolved from the Virginia Wine and Mushroom Festival.

There will be artists and crafters from all over the east coast. You will be able to find anything from fine handmade jewelry, hand painted wine glasses, hand crafted musical instruments, pottery to iron work.

If you are hungry, there will be a variety of festival food, including the famous funnel cake, fresh roasted nuts, crab cake sandwiches, steak-n-cheese, seafood, or you may wish to step inside to one of our many restaurants located at the event sit.

Entertainment will be provided by Glass Onion (Beatles music) from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Souled Out (variety music) from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Local band Glass Onion is a Beatles cover band. Souled Out blends soul, funk, rock and country. Music for everyone’s taste. Admission is $10 in advance or $15 at the gate for those who wish to wine taste. General admission is $2.
