force, it brought up those concerns all over again.”

On Saturday afternoon the New Baltimore resident brought her family to the parking lot at the Fauquier County fairgrounds. From there, they watched the funeral procession for Fairfax Det. Vicky O. Armel.

The funeral service for Armel, who is the first Fairfax police officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty, was held at McLean Bible Church. She was buried at Bright View Cemetery, about a mile away from the fairgrounds , in Warrenton.

Armel died last Monday after a gunman, later identified as Michael Kennedy, 18, opened fire on her and other officers in the parking lot of the Sully District Station in Chantilly. Kennedy, who was reportedly suffering from mental illness, was shot and killed at the scene. A second officer was critically wounded and a third sustained minor injuries, police said. A civilian was also hurt.
