While they sold the Culpeper building in the 1970s because of lack of help, Lorraine Early cites health issues as the biggest challenge they faced over the years.
John Early has survived cancer — twice.
“He’s been an inspiration to a lot of our customers,” Early said of her husband.
Thriving
Despite the illnesses, the store continued — and continues — to flourish, grow and change in its spot next door to the Early home.
“You’re learning something every day,” said Lorraine Early. “Product knowledge is a big asset.”
In the past 40 years, the couple has had some memorable moments.
The wife of an ambassador to England hired Early’s Carpet to reupholster a bed she brought back from England. How many carpet firms can claim that their staff worked on a bed that once belonged to Henry VIII?
On a more modern note, technology has played an important part in Early Carpet’s growth. For instance, the move from a crank to a forklift eased the moving of rolled carpets that are stacked 20 feet high.
