Selling a yearling involves a lot of attention to details. A buyer at a yearling sale expects the yearling to be quiet, to walk towards and away from them, and to stand quietly as it is being examined from all sides. It sounds simple enough, but try doing it over and over again every day for three or more days in the heat - as the more popular yearling are forced to do - and one can see that an animal that’s used to running with its buddies in a large paddock can become uncooperative and a handful.
That’s why the prep work that farms like Spring Hill put into a yearling is so important. Opinions about a particular yearling can be made in less than five minutes, and if a horse is obstreperous, it can cost its owner hundreds of thousands of dollars.
