A designer is frequently asked where to begin when a client wishes to redecorate. I help my clients prioritize their projects according to what will be most fulfilling to them, blending their most urgent “needs” or “wants,” with their budget considerations in mind.
Many times we start by designing the most public areas, for example, living rooms and dining rooms, as these are rooms in which we entertain and the outside world is invited to observe. This is an appropriate approach in my view, as long as you do not merely “do” the room for the sake of guests, and neglect the lifestyle you can enjoy on a dayto-day basis. Thus, today I will address many of the design considerations that need to be made when working with living rooms. Brief discussions of form versus function, focal points, furniture arrangement, typical items used to furnish a living room, scale and style follow.
