FOCAL POINTS can be a window with a view, a fireplace, a significant piece of art, or a large piano or an armoire. A focal point is any large “thing'’ of critical weight or proportion that your eye is drawn to when entering or sitting in the room. A room needs at least one focal point, but often has several. Focal points are ideally dotted around the room, so that one does not detract from another. The space may also be defined by architectural details. Examples of architectural details are windows, doors, built-in cabinetry, decorative molding, or a fireplace. Focal points and architectural details dictate style, arrangement of furnishings and natural traffic patterns. Always consider focal points and architectural details that already exist or can be created when shaping your living room.

Arranging furniture and accessories in a living room must reflect the function of the room. Because the function of a living room is for entertaining or enjoying with other people, always consider “floating” furniture around the room, rather than arranging it by fining the walls with sofas and chairs. Most rooms need the character or warmth that can be created by adding conversation areas with angles and clusters of furniture. Don’t forget to think about an area rug that could add weight to the area and define the space. It is good to have a rug that either completely fills the space under the clusters of furniture or borders the inside of the conversation areas. Lighting is an important consideration, and ambient fighting, not overhead lighting, is preferable for this type of room.
