1 he design, look and feel of a room is its FORM, and the practical use of a room is its FUNCTION. Form and function should always be addressed in unison in interior design decisions. I ask clients to evaluate them equally when prioritizing their needs in furnishing their home. If you have the luxury of having both formal and informal spaces for living and entertaining, then the living room can probably afford to have a more generous touch of formality. One of my recent clients had previously purchased a large and expensive coffee table as her first piece of furniture. Subsequently she added two young children to the family and wondered how this piece of furniture could survive the toy trucks and other items children inevitably will place upon it. Ev6n the best of designers cannot make miracles happen and short of roping off the room like a museum, I had no suggestions! So, before making major purchases it is good to have a well thought out plan with function, as well as form, in mind.
