seats and window treatments are the most frequently purchased “soft” furnishings, and a cocktail table, end tables, sofa table, chest, secretary, etc. are some of the “case goods” considered for their function and style in living rooms. Often I suggest starting out with the sofa, as it will most likely be the largest and most expensive item in the mix. The style of the frame as well as the design of the fabric with which it is upholstered will set the tone of the entire room. Sofas exist in all different styles, and an entire article could be written about buying a new sofa or reupholstering an existing piece. Since it is a large piece of upholstered furniture, choosing a larger pattern on the upholstery fabric (unless one prefers a solid or textured fabric) almost always makes sense.
