All falls down
While Old Rag may be for an adventurous breed of hiker, White Oak Canyon and the Falls of the Shenandoah National Park offer a much easier, and (almost) equally rewarding hike.
Suitable for almost any age, White Oak Canyon is a round trip hike of only 2.6 miles, very little of it uphill, and with no extended steep grades. The path winds along cascading streams, over bridges and between wispy hemlock trees.
Hikers reach the first set of falls in just over a mile. The path is well-maintained and doesn’t require any creek crossing without footbridges. But at the main falls, the highest point of the White Oak trail, booming water drops more than 15 feet and rushes downstream.
