The factory
While its 2,800 acres feature pleasing woods and lots of large paddocks, Spring Hill Farm in actuality is a factory for the production of racehorses.
“We have 90 broodmares, and we usually end up with 75 to 80 in foal,” Baker explained. “You sell 10 or so mares a year, and you end up with 60 to 65 foals.”
The mares usually ship to Kentucky to be bred and then come home to foal in Virginia. Driving down a lane, past long fences painted in the classic white, Baker stopped and pointed out a couple of foals
