Rather than finding a way to return the child or doing something worse, Tsotsi takes him home to his shanty. For the first time in his fife he assumes responsibility for someone else. Tsotsi forces a neighbor (Terry Pheto) at gunpoint to breastfeed the infant. She complies at first out of terror, but later because of tenderness she feels not just for the baby but for Tsotsi as well. Frpm the moment the infant is heard gurgling or crying, the movie becomes about his wellbeing. Never having acted on the big screen before, Chweneyagae immediately communicates a change in Tsotsi once he has someone to be responsible for.
The performances from Chweneyagae and his cast mates with their harsh but not hopeless slum life, are so full of feeling that the movie becomes a moving testament to every human being’s potential for growth. “Tsotsi” contains violence, profanity and depictions of animal cruelty.
