resurgence of sorts for the industry as the iron furnaces were called upon to supply munitions and other needs of the Confederacy. As strategic industries, the furnaces also became the targets of Union raids and a number of operations in the Shenandoah Valley were damaged multiple times or destroyed.

After the war the furnaces played a role in reconstruction and as late as 1870 Virginia was producing annually far more „ iron than it had during the year before the war. However, by the ' early twentieth century, the industry had disappeared from the State.
