It is well documented that social connections facilitate physical activities and meaningful purpose. Greater social connections have been shown to ward off depression and promote longevity. Cohousing helps older couples have a long active life together. And it provides a good place for the one who outlives the other. Outside of a strong community, a widowed spouse faces the lonely prospect of isolation in a house, and often has to move away. In cohousing, the widowed spouse is already part of a community and has less of a reason to move.
Families with young children benefit hugely from cohousing due to the pedestrian orientation, common playground and children’s friends nearby. Having other parents nearby to take turns with childcare is a huge help. But, in short, the community bonds are helpful to just about anyone in any phase of life.

Besides the community benefits, there are the environmental benefits to cohousing. If Shadowlake Village hadn’t been built, then another developer would most certainly have divided the land into 33 oneacre parcels, destroying the beautiful forest and prairie we have preserved. The same clustering concept can be applied to greater acreages in rural places like Rappahannock County. Rather than carve up 500 acres into 20 individual plots, wouldn’t it be more environmentalfriendly to place 20 homes in a small village at the edge of a 495 acre wildlife sanctuary?
