Coming in on the heels of a Virginia Governor’s Cup win for its 2005 Viognier Reserve, Rappahannock Cellars’ 2005 Viognier brought home Concordance Gold at the fifteenth annual Indy International Wine Competition held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Blue Ribbon Pavilion, July 27 to 29. The award is one of the highest honors presented at the event - only 116 wines from around the world were'chosen as Concordance Gold medal winners. Rappahannock was also awarded gold for its 2005 Viognier Reserve and 2004 Meritage.
Additionally, Rappahannock was awarded Best of Category and a gold medal for its 2005 Viognier Reserve (2006 Virginia Governor’s Cup winner), as well as an additional gold medal for its 2005 Viognier at the second Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition held July 29 and 30 at the elegant Regency Club at Regency at Dominion Valley near Haymarket, Virginia. Nearly 300 wines from eight states were entered in the competition, which was sponsored by the Vinifera Wine Growers Association (VWGA).
The largest wine competition in the US, the Indy International brought in over 3,800 wines from 17 countries. The Indy is also the second largest amateur competition in the country and holds the distinction of largest fruit wine competition.
Two panels made up of eighty-four judges, including award winning amateur winemakers, American Wine Society certified judges and wine supply shop consultants from across North America, deliberate and comment on every wine that is returned to the winemakers. The Indy International Wine Competition is sponsored by the Indiana State Fair and coordinated by the Indiana Wine Grape Council at Purdue University.
