Some readers of my last
week’s letter to the editor may wonder how I dealt with the greedy, pugnacious, market-oriented hummingbird who was intent on monopolizing the feeder I had put out with the intention that it serve all the hummers in my garden.
The answer to the problem was simplicity itself. I put out a second feeder at some distance removed from the first. The resulting marketplace was then too big for the No. 1 hummer, so that the middle and lower class hummers had free access to the nectar.
