Politeness ruled the day with these kids. I asked him where he was from and he told me Winchester. We chatted for a minute or two when I felt I could ask him the really difficult question:
“For what kind of cancer are you being treated?” He looked up at me with his angelic face and said, “I have an inoperable brain tumor.” As I tried to maintain my calm exterior as I cried inside, Kevin added that the tumor appeared to be benign although the prognosis was uncertain. I briefly told him that I, too, was a survivor and encouraged him to continue to think positively. Then I thanked Kevin for letting me take his picture and went to look for a volunteer to hug and share my story.
